A tricky thing about corporations

Posted on February 3, 2025 with tags:

Corporations can do a lot for you, but you have to make sure you aren't the product. If you are consuming a product from a company that does a lot of marketing, you are likely getting taken advantage of. Companies with big marketing and communications budgets steal your time and money.

Good examples (companies with low profit margins that don't advertise a lot, in competitive markets):

  • Mega retailers (Target, Walmart, Costco, Amazon)
  • Airlines
  • Banks

Bad examples (how many ads do you see for these?):

  • Fast fashion
  • Luxury cars
  • Sports betting
  • Fast food

Worst of all, billions in ad spend are funneled straight to big tech companies. When you lose money sports gambling, you're not only enriching sportsbooks, but also Google, Meta, and Twitter.

Also a good reason to use adblock.
